A team of researchers at Concordia University has developed a new technique to determine the identity of the senders of anonymous emails.
Benjamin Fung, a professor of Information Systems Engineering, and his team devised the technique, which uses datamining and pattern recognition procedures to find unique combinations of features that frequently recur in a suspect's emails. Tests showed that the technique has a high level of accuracy that -- unlike other methods of ascertaining authorship -- could provide presentable evidence in courts of law.
Identifying anonymous emailers can be crucial in police investigations. The cops tend to use IP addresses to locate a house where an email originated, but this technique could allow them to go a step further and pinpoint which particular person at that address wrote the email.
To test whether a suspect wrote a particular email, they first need to find patterns found in emails that are known to be characteristic of that person, from a sampling of their most recent emails. They then filter out any of these patterns if they're also found in the emails of other suspects.
