Raid on computer analyst's home unlawful

A police porn raid on the Leicestershire home of a leading forensic computer analyst has been declared unlawful by the High Court.

Two judges quashed a search warrant under which Avon and Somerset Police entered the home of Jim Bates and his wife Joan and the court ordered the return of material seized in the raid.

The amount of damages to be paid to Mr and Mrs Bates, of Stone Lodge, Drayton Road, Neville Holt, Market Harborough, to compensate for the unlawful intrusion will be assessed at a further court hearing.

In applying to Bristol Magistrates' Court for a warrant, police said Mr Bates was a "discredited 'expert' in computer forensics" - he was convicted in March last year of perjury and making false statements about his professional qualifications. He received a suspended prison sentence.
