How do you go about investigating a serious IT security breach?
Over recent years, thanks mainly to rapid advances in Internet, computing and telecommunications technology, we have seen the emergence of more open and flexible working environments. The use of mobile devices for business purposes has grown rapidly and there has been a corresponding rise in remote and home working.
While these advances have opened up many exciting new opportunities for organisations, they have also introduced some difficult security challenges.
The increased use of IT systems provides new opportunities for individuals to exploit weaknesses within an organisation’s control environment. Poorly-secured home computers on broadband and badly configured mobile devices present favourable conditions for criminal activity by allowing unauthorised access. These and other computer-based devices are increasingly used to commit or facilitate illegal and/or inappropriate activity.
Offences may range from a simple contravention of a usage policy at organisational level through to hacking, copyright theft, fraud, drug trafficking and extortion.
With all of these crimes there is likely to be a significant financial price to pay. A recent survey from the North East Fraud Forum revealed, for example, that economic crime alone costs the UK economy £32 billion per annum.
